SXSSG Poster Session
The AAG made a push for posters this year and SXSSG agreed to organize a session. We have three presenters and hope to grow at upcoming AAG meetings.
- Joyce Clapp (University of North Carolina at Greensboro): “And Maybe My Wife Won’t Be Arrested Walking the Dog”: A Participatory Poster on Housing Location Decisions
- Alexandra Ringling (University of Missouri): Homonationalist Rhetoric in Israel: Neoliberal Sexual Politics in the Gay Tourism Industry
- Madeline Levey (Florida State University): Bond, Bondage, and Spaces of Resistance: A Geographic Literary Analysis of Octavia E. Butler’s Kindred
The SXSSG Poster Session will take place on Thursday, April 4, 2019, from 1:10 PM – 2:50 PM in Lincoln 2 (Exhibition Level) – Marriott Wardman Park.

Name Change Forum
This past year, members on the SXSSG Board of Directors proposed a name change for the specialty group that would be inclusive of other forms of difference, in addition to sexuality, and be more reflective of current scholarship in the field. We held an online vote during summer 2018 and a majority of our membership was in favor of the proposal for a name change. With this forum, we’d like to provide a space for in-person conversations about the name change proposal to ensure that the process is transparent and open for everyone to participate. Rather than a formal panel, we’d like the forum to be more of an informal workshop where we all engage in a dialogue about why we believe a name change for the specialty group is or isn’t a good idea. If the majority of the broader membership agrees to move forward with the name change, then we’ll discuss potential names.
The Name Change Forum will take place on Friday, April 5, 2019, from 9:55 AM – 11:35 AM in Stones Throw 3 (Mezzanine Level) – Marriott Wardman Park.

Following the Name Change Forum will be the SXSSG Business Meeting where we’ll review last year’s minutes and discuss old and new business. Importantly, we’ll go over the proposed changes to the SXSSG Bylaws, which has not been updated since 1999. We’ll also hold officer elections for the following positions: Co-Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, and Sponsored Sessions Program Coordinator. All officer positions will serve the 2019-2021 term. Please refer to the “Sexuality and Space Specialty Group: 2019 Officer Nominations” email for more details.
The SXSSG Business Meeting will take place on Friday, April 5, 2019, from 11:45 AM – 1:00 PM in Wilson A (Mezzanine Level) – Marriott Wardman Park.

We’re excited to have Dr. Lorena Muñoz as the SXSSG Keynote Speaker at AAG 2019. Dr. Muñoz’s keynote address is titled, “Queering Economies and Messy Urban Futures.” Please find a condensed version of the abstract below.
Abstract: This presentation is an exploration of rethinking urban futures through ‘queering’ economies, meaning, thinking about the future of urban centers as a queer mess, dialectically (re) producing what Manalansan (2015) calls ‘mess’ in queer urban-worldmaking(s). As such, I call towards ‘messing up’ the way we think about economies that frame the everyday social realities within normative categorizations. To do so, I look towards what I call queering economies, rethinking ‘economies’ as messy, chaotic, heterogeneous economic processes as at once queer, entangled, and relational. This presentation is based on knowledges and experiences that resulted from thinking with the different street vending communities I worked with over the last fifteen years in Los Angeles, United States; Cancún, Mexico; Bogotá, Colombia; and Johannesburg, South Africa.
The SXSSG Keynote Address will take place on Saturday, April 6, 2019, from 1:10 PM – 2:50 PM in Hoover (Mezzanine Level) – Marriott Wardman Park.
